Welcome to the childcare database which aims to help you find up-to-date and accurate information about childcare in Newport.

The Family Information Service works with childcare providers in Newport to maintain this information.

The database gives you peace of mind that the childcare providers are:

  • who they say they are
  • if they need to be, are registered with the Care Inspectorate Wales
  • and are therefore inspected, regulated and aim to exceed the national minimum standards outlined in legislation

Under the Childcare Act 2006 councils in Wales have to secure sufficient childcare to meet the requirements of parents in their area.

Search for childminders

Search for local day nurseries

  • Day nurseries offer care during the working day for children aged 0-5 years.
  • Suitable play provision and equipment should be available as well as access to secure outdoor play space. 
  • Some nurseries offer part-time early years education funded by the local authority from the term after a child’s third birthday.

Search for out of school clubs

  • Out of school clubs care and play opportunities for children aged 3-14 years outside school hours and during the holidays.
  • Children under 8 years must be escorted to and from the club. 

Search for playgroups/cylchoedd meithrin

  • Playgroups and cylchoedd meithrin provide part-time care for children aged 2 ½ – 5 years
  • They are open during the school term and each session lasts no longer than 4 hours
  • They provide learning experiences through structured play in groups and the cylchoedd meithrin offer pre-school experiences through the medium of Welsh
  • A suitable range of play provision and equipment should be available
  • Some playgroups and cylchoedd meithrin are able to offer part-time early years education, funded by the local council from the term after a child’s 3rd birthday

A crèche will provide occasional day care for children under 8 and need to be registered if operating for more than 2 hours a day, even where individual children attend for shorter periods.

A nanny will care for your child in your own home and does not have to be registered with the local authority, for further information contact a reputable agency.
