We are looking for volunteers to carry out practical conservation tasks around Fourteen Locks Canal Centre and Allt-yr-Yn Local Nature Reserve.
If you like working outside, enjoy Newport's countryside and have some spare time we'd love to hear from you!
Volunteers work on tasks in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy and the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre.
Tasks could include minor maintenance on fencing, bridges and pathways; cutting back undergrowth, creating log piles, putting up nest boxes and managing wildflower meadows; removing pond weed or dredging and clearing litter.
The volunteers meet every Thursday from 10am until 3pm or 4pm - you would not be expected to attend every week.
We are looking for people with:
- an interest in and commitment to outdoor environmental work
- a sense of humour and flexibility
- good communication skills who like to work as part of a team
- an ability to take part in practical tasks outdoors
On the job training will be given by the council's countryside warden and Keep Wales Tidy officers.
Tools and protective equipment will be issued and you should wear sensible clothing suitable for working outdoors in all weathers including sturdy work boots – with steel toe caps if you have them. There will be full insurance cover.
Transport will be provided during volunteer hours but you will need to make your own way to the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre for 10am.
You will need to bring food and drink for the day.
For further information contact Newport City Council and ask for the biodiversity and education officer.
